Sheldon Cadet Squadron Participates in Wreaths Across America Reading

Sheldon Cadets helped read the names of over 78,000 men and women buried in the Houston National Cemetery. Service members from every American war are buried in the Houston National Cemetery and Sheldon Cadet Squadron is proud to honor our fallen heroes.

This year Sheldon Cadet Squadron will be participating in and selling wreaths for Wreaths Across America – Houston. Make sure you keep an eye out for details on how you can help!

Sheldon Cadet Squadron wins First Place at the 2012 National Cadet Competition!

The Sheldon Cadet Squadron, Texas Wing and Southwest Region, drill team is proud to announce it placed first overall in the 2012 National Cadet Competition of the Civil Air Patrol held at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, June 20-23.

The drill team, all members of the Sheldon Cadet Squadron of Houston, Texas competed against the best-of-the-best from around the nation. The drill team competed against six other drill teams in In-Ranks Inspection, Standard Drill, Innovative Drill, Written Examination, Panel Quiz, Mile Run, and Volleyball. The team earned first place in the Mile Run, Panel Quiz and Innovative Drill, second place in In-Ranks Inspection and third place in Volleyball.

Since 1948, highly skilled and motivated Civil Air Patrol cadets from across America have gathered for National Cadet Drill Competitions. Since 2005, the Sheldon Cadet Squadron has competed four times in NCC and each time it improved going from 6th in 2005, to 5th in 2009, 4th in 2011 and finally national champions in 2012. This is the eighth time the Southwest Region has won a National Cadet Competition, the third time for Texas Wing (and the first since 1975).

The team has been training for the past ten months to earn their spot as the #1 team in the nation. Team members are team commander C/Major Joshua Philips and primary team members: C/Capt Tristan Edwards, C/Capt Daiquon Lucas, C/2Lt Jorge Galvan, C/2Lt Arianna Gonzalez, C/2Lt, Marcus Johnson, C/2Lt, Christian Pena, C/2Lt Chrisabel Rocha, C/2Lt Monica Salazar, C/2Lt Lewis Yarbrough, C/CMSgt Morgan Fletcher, C/CMSgt Elizabeth Sanchez and C/MSgt Anthony Galeano; along with C/MSgt Darion McClinton who served as the team’s alternate. Team sponsors were: Lt. Col James Peace and First Lieutenant Amber Manfredi.

We would like to thank and congratulate our fellow competitors in the drill team and color guard competitions. Our cadets always enjoy meeting new cadets and it was an honor to compete with 115 of our nation’s top cadets.

Cost: $15.00

You must be a MSgt or above to attend.

You must let C/Capt Edwards know before 14 August if you are attending. After August 14th, if you cancel or you end up not attending, after saying you will, you will still owe the $15 as we will not be able to get our money back on your ticket once we purchase it.

Cadets need to wear a squadron shirt and must bring p/t clothes. You should eat breakfast before you come as we will not be serving breakfast.

It is mandatory that all cadets bring both permission slips, signed my their parent when they come. You will not be permitted to travel to Sky High Sports if you do not have a Sky High Sports permission slip signed.

Carr elected CAP national commander, Vazquez national vice commander

“KENTUCKY – Civil Air Patrol National Vice Commander Brig. Gen. Charles L. “Chuck” Carr Jr. was elected national commander today by the CAP National Board, and Middle East Region Commander Col. Joseph R. Vazquez was elected national vice commander.

Carr’s election to a three-year term as national commander occurred on the first day of business at the 2011 Civil Air Patrol Annual Conference and National Board meeting, held this week at the Louisville Marriott Downtown. Vazquez’s election to a one-year term followed about two hours later.”

Sheldon Color Guard & Drill Team participate in the Texas Wing Cadet Competitions!!

During spring break, the Civil Air Patrol Sheldon Cadet Squadron competed in the Texas Wing Drill Team and Color Guard Competition located in Bastrop, Texas. While at the competition both teams had to compete in seven academic, physical fitness and marching events.

The Sheldon Cadet Squadron Drill Team earned 1st place honors in the in-ranks inspection, innovative drill, volleyball tournament and panel quiz. The innovative drill routine is compromised of different standard drill movements that the cadets developed. The four minute routine is performed from memory without any verbal commands. The Sheldon Cadet Squadron Drill Team went on to place 2nd in the standard drill event, mile run, and written exam. Also receiving individual awards for their efforts were Cadet Monica Salazar who received the Fleet Foot Female award for her 7:05 mile run time and Cadet Juan Coronado who received the Fleet Foot Male award for his 5:45 mile run time. The team finished the competition with a 1st place overall championship and the spot to represent Texas at the Southwest Region Competition to be held April 1-3, 2011 in San Antonio, Texas.

The Sheldon Cadet Squadron Color Guard took 1st place in the mile run, in-ranks uniform inspection, outdoor colors presentation, and indoor colors presentation. The indoor colors presentation involved the four competing members presenting the flags in an indoor mock ceremony. The outdoor colors presentation had the team formally raise, lower and fold the flags at the Camp Swift Headquarters building. The Color Guard also took 2nd place in standard drill and 3rd in panel bowl quiz and written exam. Also receiving an individual award for her efforts was Cadet Sally Miramontes who received the Fleet Foot Female award for her 7:08 mile run time. The Color Guard tied for first after all seven events. However, the team ended up losing the tie breaker giving them 2nd place overall.

The members of the Sheldon Cadet Squadron Drill team consists of C.E. King High School cadets Joshua Phillips ( Drill Team Commander) , Yeymy Chicas , Juan Coronado , Anthony Galeano , Jorge Galvan , Katrina Girod , Arianna Gonzalez , Tamara Jones , Daiquon Lucas , Christianjaye Pena , Luis Ramirez , Chrisabel Rocha , Monica Salazar, North Shore High School Cadet Tristan Edwards and Null Middle School Cadet Leo Elizondo. The Color Guard members include King Middle School cadets Lewis Yarbrough (Team Commander), Isabel Luna, Sally Miramontes, Carmen Luna, and King High School cadet Sabrina Pena. These cadets have been thru months of practicing and have sacrificed so much to be a part of this great organization. The Texas Wing Civil Air Patrol and the Sheldon ISD could not be more proud of them!
